Le terme centrali di Aquinum e gli ambienti caldi del settore maschile: evoluzione del sistema di riscaldamento

The paper analyzes in detail the heated rooms of the male sector of the central baths of Aquinum, defining the spaces at the time of the construction of the complex in the Augustan age and their transformations over time resulting from important restructuring phases. A complex and varied picture emerges which is also reflected in the technical solutions adopted to heat the rooms themselves. It is therefore possible to outline the evolution of the heating system, first designed according to the criteria in place between the end of the 1st century BC and the beginning of the 1st century AD, and then enhanced and adapted to new technological solutions, necessary to cope with more and more demanding and numerous users.

Il contributo analizza nel dettaglio gli ambienti riscaldati del settore maschile delle terme centrali di Aquinum, definendo gli spazi al momento della costruzione del complesso in età augustea e le loro trasformazioni nel tempo derivanti da importanti fasi di ristrutturazione. Emerge un quadro complesso e variegato che si riversa anche nelle soluzioni tecniche adottate per riscaldare gli stessi ambienti. È quindi possibile delineare l’evoluzione del sistema di riscaldamento, dapprima progettato secondo i criteri in essere fra la fine del I a.C. e l’inizio del I d.C., e poi potenziato e adattato alle nuove soluzioni tecnologiche, necessarie per far fronte ad un’utenza via via sempre più esigente e numerosa.
