The essay aims at exploring how the women of the early nineteenth-century Italian Alpine and pre-Alpine Arc responded to the issue of extramarital sexual violence. Thus, it scrutinizes the legal proceedings from the Criminal Court of First Instance in Como, dating back to the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, where the Austrian Criminal Code of 1803 was in force. Through the analysis of the files concerning the rape crimes from 1820 to 1833, the research outlines the main features of sexual violence cases occurred in the Province of Como, comparing and contrasting the episodes that happened in mountain municipalities with those of the hillside areas. In doing so, it reveals which practices the female subjects involved used to restore their honour, even before taking legal action, it examines the plaintiffs’ narratives and reflects on their reception by the judges.
