I propose that the clay plaque IM 5902 could be interpreted as a clay replica of a Victory Stele, a synthetic ‘visualisation’ of a celebratory inscription and a ‘translation’ of images of an old model of kingship emulated by a ruler of Kiš (such as Ašduni-yarim) or Babylon in this period. This plaque could be interpreted as the replica of an artwork selected for the production of more copies (thanks to the mould technology) and a wider consumption: for people, the experience to see monumental and portable works of art “in conjunction with each other” gives new significance and value to artefacts in the ancient Near East.

Abstract
I propose that the clay plaque IM 5902 could be interpreted as a clay replica of a Victory Stele, a synthetic ‘visualisation’ of a celebratory inscription and a ‘translation’ of images of an old model of kingship emulated by a ruler of Kiš (such as Ašduni-yarim) or Babylon in this period. This plaque could be interpreted as the replica of an artwork selected for the production of more copies (thanks to the mould technology) and a wider consumption: for people, the experience to see monumental and portable works of art “in conjunction with each other” gives new significance and value to artefacts in the ancient Near East.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
