Ophioviruses are plant-infecting viruses with nonenveloped, filamentous, naked nucleocapsid virions. Members of the genus Ophiovirus, the only genus inside the family Aspiviridae, have a segmented single-stranded negative-sense RNA genome (ca. 11.3–12.5 kb), encompassing three or four not polyadenilated linear segments; in total, these segments encode four to seven proteins mainly in antisense orientation (García et al. 2017). Up to now the genus Ophiovirus includes seven species (Ophiovirus citri, Ophiovirus ranunculi, Ophiovirus freesiae, Ophiovirus lactucae, Ophiovirus mirafioriense, Ophiovirus tulipae and Ophiovirus vaccinii) with viruses infecting both monocots and dicots, and including vegetables, ornamentals, shrubs, and trees (García et al. 2017).
