Combustion technologies for heat and energy production are in continuous development with the aim of increasing combustion yields reducing, at the same time, the environmental impact related to the pollutant emissions. Particular attention is devoted to the reduction of particulate emissions since epidemiological and environmental research have shown its dangerous effects on human health and air quality. Recent studies on the chemical and physical characterization of the carbonaceous particulate have shown that these effects are strictly related to the chemical composition and sizes of the fine and ultrafine carbonaceous particulate. The most advanced diagnostic techniques for the determination of thesize distribution function and the chemical characteristics of combustion formed particles are reviewed in this paper.
