We study a nematic liquid crystal confined between two parallel plates where uniaxial boundary conditions are imposed on the order tensor representing the molecular alignment. A classical bifurcation scenario corresponding to the choice of symmetric boundary conditions is unfolded by the action of a symmetry breaking perturbation.
