Abstract

The authors have recently described a new Zelkova in southeastern Sicily, under the name of Z. sicula. They now define its ecological requirements as well as the biogeographical and historical significance of this discovery. Especially, in the historical field, the existing data show that the representatives of the genus Zelkova had been present in peninsular ltaly as back as 31,000 B.P. We can assume that the present Sicilian population is the last remnant of the Wurmian formations.
