Abstract
e paper examines a marble statue of a kneeling Barbarian found in Catania in the 1950s, up today unpublished. A new exam of the sculpture for a correct typological, stylistic, chronological and monumental reading is proposed. In fact, the iconographic type is part of a precise triumphal figurative trend connected to the theme of the Parthica signa recepta, widely spread by the Augustan propaganda aſter 20-19 BCE. e statuary type is probably recognizable as an Augustan Neuschöpfung, for which the denomination of Kneeling Barbarian Pozzuoli-Catania is now here proposed, moving from the two replicas known so far. e good level of execution, the style and the marble used allow us to as- sign the production to a “Neo-attic” workshop of eclectic-classicist taste, probably based in Puteoli, particularly active for high-ranking clients between the end of 1 st century BC and the first decades of the 1 st century CE. e reading of the triumphal meanings underlying the use of the type as a so called “speaking image” in archaeological contexts attri- butable to the Imperial circle, allows us to add new important pieces to the knowledge of the structure and cultural consumption of the Catina colony aſter its foundation.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
