Abstract

In this chapter, the nature of cathode rays is investigated through the presentation of the original experiments by Joseph John Thomson. In his seminal paper, Thomson presented the results of three experiments pointing out the existence of negatively charged particles, smaller than the smallest particle known until then. We also present two modern variations of Thomson experiments which allow to one evaluate the charge-to-mass ratio of these particles, nowadays called electrons.
