Optical Wireless Communications (OWC) have the potential to provide new solutions for the communication systems in both indoor and outdoor scenarios. Here, we present an innovative approach for OWC data transmission in indoor environments. We experimentally combined commercial off-the-shelf components i.e., light emitting diodes and photodiodes, with a luminescent solar concentrator. These concentrators are novel for OWC applications; thus, we perform a complete characterization of these devices and of the whole system. To validate this system, a high-definition video optical transmission demonstration is reported.

Abstract

Optical Wireless Communications (OWC) have the potential to provide new solutions for the communication systems in both indoor and outdoor scenarios. Here, we present an innovative approach for OWC data transmission in indoor environments. We experimentally combined commercial off-the-shelf components i.e., light emitting diodes and photodiodes, with a luminescent solar concentrator. These concentrators are novel for OWC applications; thus, we perform a complete characterization of these devices and of the whole system. To validate this system, a high-definition video optical transmission demonstration is reported.
