Abstract

There are currently many drivers pushing the transport refrigerationsector towards more sustainable refrigeration systems, being at the sametime more efficient and adopting natural working fluids (NWF) in placeof synthetics. Due to the variety of involved means of transport, on thedifferent and challenging boundary conditions and safety requirementsand not last the fact of not being the largest user of refrigerants, therefrigeration systems for mobile refrigeration have not always beendedicated the same R\&D effort as stationary refrigeration and AC.However, it is now becoming more and more urgent to identify sustainablefuture proof solutions for land and marine transport. To this extent, transport refrigeration can benefit from the experience gained in othersectors and achieve sustainable solution in a short time. There areactually many examples of efficient NWF based systems already out in themarket; some others are on the way, also supported by internationalprojects, and others still need some regulatory provisions to becomewidespread, mainly those involving flammable refrigerants. Innovationsin the refrigeration systems need finally to keep the pace and harmonizewith the revolution that the transport sector is undergoing towardshybrid and electric vehicles.
