SAYING THE CATASTROPHE. POETRY AND PHILOSOPHY IN VICO AND MERLEAU-PONTY. This essay points out the theme of catastrophe as a central point of Vico’s philosophy, and it compares Vico and Merleau-Ponty, focusing on the relationship between words, language and sensitivity. Both philosophers share the attempt of making a narrow connection between universality and singularity, between ideas and sensible experience. Moving from this assumption, poetry and philosophy can define a different kind of knowledge and expression than the scientific one. The ultimate purpose of the reflexion of Vico and Merleau-Ponty would be to tighten the relationship between language, truth and action in order to overcome the catastrophe and restore the social bond between men.
