The aim of the article is to offer an overview on the major regional organizations and institution dealing with maritime affaires, such as Contracting Parties of the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM), the Northwest Pacific Action Plan (NOWPAP), Intergovernmental Meeting of the Coordinating Body of the Seas of East Asia (COBSEA) and Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA). In 2021, global and regional efforts to address marine and coastal challenges continued despite the constraints imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, with numerous virtual and hybrid meetings held across various regions. Key achievements included the adoption of strategic plans, regional action frameworks, and commitments to sustainable marine resource management. Notable outcomes include the signing of the Preah Sihanouk Ministerial Declaration at the East Asian Seas Congress, UNEP’s global assessment on marine litter revealing that plastic constitutes 85% of marine debris, and the adoption of the Baltic Sea Action Plan to address biodiversity, eutrophication, and climate change. Additionally, Arctic Council initiatives focused on sustainable development, while the CCAMLR emphasized krill fishery management in the Antarctic. In the Mediterranean, agreements advanced biodiversity conservation, reduced maritime emissions, and promoted circular economies. Regions such as the Caribbean, South Asia, and the Northwest Pacific developed strategies to strengthen environmental governance, marine pollution management, and climate adaptation measures. Initiatives in the Southeast Atlantic and the Western Indian Ocean prioritized regional cooperation on ocean governance, marine biodiversity conservation, and blue economy frameworks. These efforts underscore the global commitment to achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) and protecting marine ecosystems amid evolving environmental challenges.

Abstract
These efforts underscore the global commitment to achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) and protecting marine ecosystems amid evolving environmental challenges.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
