The concept of ecological indicator is revised in the view of the implementation of the Water Framework Directive of the European Union to coastal systems (WFD, Directive 2000/60/EC). Exergy and specific exergy were applied to coastal systems and compared with other indicators and methodologies in order to test the validity of exergy as indicator of environmental health.
