The concern about the global warming associated with the increasing atmosphere releases of CH4 and CO2 arisen from the human dependence on fossil fuels urges the industrial and academic research to explore alternative fuels with net-zero carbon. Lignocellulosic biomass represents a valuable feedstock to produce sustainable fuels. Indeed, lignocellulosic biomass can be converted into 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural, which is a precursor for the attainment of the biofuel 2,5-Dimethylfuran with characteristics similar to gasoline. Several studies are reported in literature analyzing the various steps such as biomass pretreatment, components separation, and catalytic systems suitable for the cellulosic biomass conversion. The aim of this chapter is to critically discuss all the issues trying to give an overview of the most promising approaches, considering also the total production cost of the biofuel DMF and how it compares with the traditional fossil-derived ones.

Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to critically discuss all the issues trying to give an overview of the most promising approaches, considering also the total production cost of the biofuel DMF and how it compares with the traditional fossil-derived ones.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
