This paper focuses on the role of reputation and confidence (fides) in contemporary sciences and medicine from a rhetorical and argumentative perspective. In particular, the text reflects on the importance of persuasion in scientific discourses, on the orators’ reliability, on the rhetorical concept of ethos, and on typical aspects of scientific ethos. As a final point, the paper concisely considers some social implications of adopting a linguistic perspective in the analysis of the reputation role in science.
