This paper explores connections between Giambattista Vico’s philosophy and contemporary standpoints on rhetoric, particularly referring to Chaïm Perelman’s argumentation theory. The first part of the text (§§ 2-5) analyses letters from the Archives «Chaïm Perelman» of the Université libre de Bruxelles. These documents show that Perelman was interested in Vico’s rhetorical perspective, although he refers to him in an atypical way (i.e., in The New Rhetoric he never quotes The New Science). The second part (§§ 6-8) illustrates certain theoretical resemblances and differences between Vico’s viewpoint and Perelman/Olbrecths-Tyteca’s Treatise of Argumentation, which support the idea that contemporary argumentation studies may consider Vico as a fruitful interlocutor.

Abstract
This paper explores connections between Giambattista Vico’s philosophy and contemporary standpoints on rhetoric, particularly referring to Chaïm Perelman’s argumentation theory. The first part of the text (§§ 2-5) analyses letters from the Archives «Chaïm Perelman» of the Université libre de Bruxelles. These documents show that Perelman was interested in Vico’s rhetorical perspective, although he refers to him in an atypical way (i.e., in The New Rhetoric he never quotes The New Science). The second part (§§ 6-8) illustrates certain theoretical resemblances and differences between Vico’s viewpoint and Perelman/Olbrecths-Tyteca’s Treatise of Argumentation, which support the idea that contemporary argumentation studies may consider Vico as a fruitful interlocutor.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
