The properties of one-dimensional (1-D) unidirectional leaky-wave antennas (LWAs) based on partially reflecting sheets (PRS) are analyzed here. In particular, we derive conditions for maximizing the gain and provide analytical formulas to determine the pattern bandwidth. Design equations are finally obtained to optimize the gain of a practical PRS-based 1-D unidirectional LWA propagating a TE mode.
