Recent research conducted at Sapienza University of Rome on two-dimensional leaky-wave antennas is reviewed. The focus is on Fabry-Perot cavity radiators whose partiallyreflecting screen is constituted by a metasurface exhibiting rotationally invariant electromagnetic features. Moving from structures based on metal strip gratings, the paper addresses planar structures that include omnidirectional homogenized metasurfaces, considering in particular antennas based on metal patterned screens and possibly loaded with additional wire-medium layers, for which ad hoc analytical and numerical tools are developed, and reconfigurable antennas based on electrostatically biased graphene sheets.
