Carbocatalysis expands its applicability to the synthesis of indenes via intramolecular Friedel-Crafts like alkylation of Morita-Baylis-Hilman alcohols. Graphene oxide (GO) dictated the conditions to document a C−C bond forming protocol featuring large scope (14 examples) and moderate to high yield (45-80 %) under mild reaction conditions. Detailed mechanistic investigation completed the present study.
