Theoretical and experimental results on the use of intensity- and phase-modulated pump in single-mode optical fibers for Brillouin-based distributed sensing are reported. A simple analytic solution is found for both types of modulation in sinusoidal regime, permitting to gain physical insight into the mechanisms involved in stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) interaction. Experimental results on SBS excited by a phase-modulated pump in sinusoidal regime are reported for the first time.

Abstract

Theoretical and experimental results on the use of intensity- and phase-modulated pump in single-mode optical fibers for Brillouin-based distributed sensing are reported. A simple analytic solution is found for both types of modulation in sinusoidal regime, permitting to gain physical insight into the mechanisms involved in stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) interaction. Experimental results on SBS excited by a phase-modulated pump in sinusoidal regime are reported for the first time.
