The Mediterranean basin is a complex and diverse geographical area characterized by significant heterogeneity in terms of cultures and level of development. Within this context, the status of women epitomizes the existing disparities. There is an observable trend towards gender equity, which anticipates the gradual elimination of the gender gap in key sectors such as science and technology. The existence of a correlation between research, innovation and level of development is well established, and recent studies increasingly confirm the direct and positive link between gender equality and economic development. Reducing gender gaps in STEM means, in addition to eliminating disparities between men and women, also increasing scientific productivity.
