New geophysical investigations were carried out in addition to the excavation and study of archaeological materials. This new research serves as the starting point for the curation of all previous textual and material documentation, which will be managed in a digital environment

Abstract

The collection, curation, analysis, and recontextualization of archaeological legacy data from the Roman villa del Casale in Piazza Arme- rina (EN) in their relation to the wider Mediterranean guide the research initiated in 2021. The new project was inaugurated by an agree- ment between the Archaeological Park of Morgantina and the Roman Villa del Casale of Piazza Armerina and the University of Bologna, under the umbrella of CISEM (Interuniversity Center for Studies on Late Antique Housing in the Mediterranean), and collaborations with the CNR-ISPC, the University of Enna “Kore” and the University of South Florida’s Institute for Digital Exploration. In the western area of the villa, two excavation campaigns were carried out in 2022 and 2023 as part of an international Summer Scho- ol that involved students and teachers from the University of Athens, Bologna, Cyprus, Krakow, Oviedo, Seville, the Peloponnese, Stockholm, and Wroclaw, as well as the University of South Florida. New geophysical investigations were carried out in addition to the excavation and study of archaeological materials. This new research serves as the starting point for the curation of all previous textual and material documentation, which will be managed in a digital environment
