The paper is focused on the results of recent research activities carried out on the Messapic city walls of Ugento, built around the middle of the 4th cent. BC and probably working until the end of the 3th cent. BC. The investigations were aimed at identifying any different construction phases and at defining the stone material procurement strategies adopted by this huge building site. At the same time the calcarenite quarries exploited for the construction of the walls were also studied and the remains of the moat were examined in relation to the geology of the first substrate. Furthermore, interesting new data on the walls also come from historical cartography and archive documents.

Abstract
The paper is focused on the results of recent research activities carried out on the Messapic city walls of Ugento, built around the middle of the 4th cent. BC and probably working until the end of the 3th cent. BC. The investigations were aimed at identifying any different construction phases and at defining the stone material procurement strategies adopted by this huge building site. At the same time the calcarenite quarries exploited for the construction of the walls were also studied and the remains of the moat were examined in relation to the geology of the first substrate. Furthermore, interesting new data on the walls also come from historical cartography and archive documents.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
