Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are important members of the plant micro- biota, being associated with the roots of 80% of land plants. As obligate symbionts, they are able to enhance their host’s fitness by improving mineral nutrition. AMF have their own microbiota, too (Desiro et al, 2014), since some of them possess un- cultivable endobacteria inside their cytoplasm. AMF are therefore the hub for an interkingdom interaction between plants, fungi and bacteria (Bonfante and Desirò, 2017). While the use of transcriptomics (Salvioli et al., 2016), proteomics (Vannini et al., 2016) and metabolomics shed light on some relevant aspects of this complex biological network, genomic data for AMF are limited to the model species Rhi- zophagus irregularis, which does not possess endobacteria. Here, we present the first draft of the Gigaspora margarita metagenome, an AMF hosting the obligate endobacterium Candidatus Glomeribacter gigasporarum (CaGg).
