“Sombreros de copa” from the Hellenistic city of Finziade: a contribution to the study of circulation in Sicily

The paper focuses on the fragments of Iberian kalathoi, also known as ‘Sombreros de copa’, found in the Hellenistic-Roman city of Finziade on Monte S. Angelo di Licata (AG). Here, between 2003 and 2014, 12 houses (2nd century B. C.) were systematically excavated. The excavations yielded fragments belonging to three different Iberian kalathoi, all from cistern 1 of house 4. The layer deposited on the cistern’s bottom is of fundamental importance for the chronological setting of House 4 last occupation, around the middle of the first century B. C., thanks to the connection in the layer between the kalathoi and some amphora fragments, a lamp and unguentaria that are datable between the 2nd and the 1st century B. C. The paper analyzes the diffusion of this ceramic class in Sicily, where it was found in 11 sites, all located in coastal areas that show different affinities with Finziades from the point of view of urban planning, architecture and material culture.
