This contribution analyses the prologue of the Chevalier de la charrette by Chrétien de Troyes following a new philological examination of the manuscript tradition. The numerous previous interpretative hypotheses are newly reconsidered and evaluated based on their conformity to the text that results from the philological analysis and the reconstruction of the high degree of rhetorical elaboration.
