Between 2013 and 2014, a stratigraphic excavation in the interior of Fornices XII and XIII was carried out near the archaeological area of the Circus Maximus. The surveys were conducted under the scientific direction of the Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali in collaboration with the students of the Sapienza–Università di Roma, Department of Ancient Sciences–Ancient Topography division. The nearby spaces under examination had been at the center of a recent intervention for preservative restoration that involved the entire archaeological area.
