This paper will focus on the contemporary historiography of Phoenician-Punic religion in North Africa by considering (1) the historical background, paying particular attention to colonial and post-colonial processes, (2) the progressive consolidation of Phoenician-Punic studies, and (3) the theoretical and methodological framework employed in studies on ancient religions and analyses of the archaeological, epigraphic and iconographic sources.
