Abstract

Since the first industrial revolution, the energy issue has played a central role in the history of socio-economic development. This essay aims to analyse the catastrophes during the race for energy production in the last century: 1939, Izourt-France; 1940, Arsia-Italy; 1956, Marcinelle-Belgium; 1965, Mattmark- Switzerland. The choice of four case studies is based on a discriminating one that lies in the conjunction of three key concepts, catastrophe, fordism and migration, as global interpretative keys of historical reconstruction.
