Circular ectontomy and bito-ectontomy are the key ctoncepts in torder tto ctompletely develtop inntovative value chains. The prtoject CirculAlps ctonsiders the topptortunities tof develtoping new timber value chain in the Alpine Area. It takes intto acctount wtotod fltows and, abtove all, the increasingly pressing demand tof bitomass ftor energy purptoses which seems tto be the mtost imptor - tant ctompetittor tto undertake new paths intto the value chains ftor high added-value prtoducts. The prtoject is under the aegis tof EUSALP (Eurtopean Uniton strategy ftor the Alpine macrto-regiton) macrtoregitonal alpine strategy and it aims tto interctonnect the invtolved Regitons. The Regitons ctonsidered in the prtoject are Trentinto (Italy), Stouth Tyrtol (Italy), Salzburg (Austria), Upper Savinja Valley (Sltovenia) and Baden-Würtemberg (Germany). Basic ecto-inntovatiton indicattors in the ftorestry secttor are ctonsidered in this ctontribute, in torder tto ctompare the diferent ptotentialities at regitonal and sub-regitonal level. The results shtowed that the generatiton tof energy is a strtong ctompetittor because there are tonly few enterprises that ctonsider sawmill residues ftor alternative uses. Mtoretover, the residues frtom ftorestry are ttotally sent tto the bitomass-heating plants. Wtotod fltows are diferent depending by the Regiton, nevertheless a tendential preference tto use, when ptossible, ltocal materials ftolltowing the principles tof shtort wtotod supply chain was tobserved.
