Evaluating the effect of home-based working employing causal bayesian networks and potential outcomes

Covid-19 generated an unprecedented shock on the Italian economy, which severely af- fected firm performance. This work focuses on estimating the causal effect of implement- ing home-based working (HBW) after the pandemic outbreak on firms’ expected revenues. The analysis uses a unique firm-level dataset, which captures a rich set of features before and after the spread of the virus. Causal effect estimation is performed implementing an integrated approach that merges Causal Graphs and Potential Outcomes frameworks. The results are consistent with the fact that HBW equips firms with greater flexibility and helps contain productivity decreases in Covid times.

L’epidemia di Covid-19 ha generato uno shock senza precedenti sull’economia ital- iana, con gravi conseguenze sulla performance delle imprese. Questo lavoro ha l’obiettivo di stimare l’effetto causale dell’implementazione del telelavoro durante la pandemia sul fatturato atteso delle imprese. L’analisi si avvale di un dataset che contiene un ricco set di caratteristiche di un vasto gruppo di imprese, intervistate prima e dopo il diffondersi del virus. La stima dell’effetto causale viene effettuata ricorrendo ad un approccio che unisce Grafi Causali e Outcome Potenziali. I risultati dell’analisi confermano che il telelavoro aumenta la flessibilit`a delle imprese e le aiuta a limitare i cali di produttivit`a riconducibili al Covid-19.
