Il progetto PRIN SHERDs – NetworkS in HellEnistic and Roman MeDiterranean – Making and Managing HiStory with Material Culture

The project SHERDs - ‘Networks in Hellenistic and Roman Mediterranean - making and managing history with material culture’, financed within the framework of the PRIN 2022, has the priority objective of increasing the information potential of material culture records in general, and ceramics in particular, as a tool for a better understanding of the socio-cultural processes that characterised the Mediterranean in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The definition of specific historical issues revolving around the production, trade, use and discarding of material, the selection of five case studies in a national context where these issues emerge with particular evidence, the definition of shared methodologies strongly oriented towards the development of strategies for the management, analysis and sharing of data, as well as extensive campaigns of archaeometric analysis of materials, constitute the essential components through which SHERDs intends to pursue this objective. Having clarified the aims of the project, the contribution illustrates the research and offers an initial account of the results achieved at the site of Villa Maria in Syracuse, whose position within the city's artisanal district in the Hellenistic and Roman periods makes it a privileged context for investigating the production and trade of certain classes of materials, whose wide dissemination in the regional and extra-regional spheres increases their significance and importance for the reconstruction of the socio-economic processes underlying them.

Il progetto SHERDs – “Networks in Hellenistic and Roman Mediterranean - making and managing history with material culture”, finanziato nell’ambito del PRIN 2022, ha come obiettivo prioritario quello di accrescere il potenziale informativo delle attestazioni di cultura materiale in generale, e ceramica in particolare, come strumento per una migliore comprensione dei processi socio-culturali che hanno caratterizzato il Mediterraneo in età ellenistica e romana. La definizione di specifiche questioni storiche, che ruotano intorno alla produzione, commercio, utilizzo e scarto del materiale, la selezione di cinque casi studio in ambito nazionale ove tali questioni emergano con particolare evidenza, la definizione di metodologie condivise e fortemente orientate alla messa a punto di strategie di gestione, analisi e condivisione di dati, nonché vaste campagne di analisi archeometriche dei materiali, costituiscono le componenti essenziali, grazie alle quali in SHERDs si intende perseguire tale obiettivo. Il contributo, chiarite le finalità del progetto, illustra le ricerche e offre un primo resoconto dei risultati raggiunti nel sito di villa Maria a Siracusa, la cui posizione all’interno del quartiere artigianale della città in età ellenistica e romana lo pone come contesto privilegiato per approfondire le questioni della produzione e del commercio di alcune classi di materiali, la cui ampia diffusione in ambito regionale e extraregionale ne accresce la significatività e l’importanza per la ricostruzione dei processi socio-economici che ne stanno alla base.
