With the crowns of the Hispanic Monarchy, Philip II inherited from Charles V a complicated Mediterranean geopolitical situation, in which the defence of the Kingdom of Sardinia was strategic from the aims of the Franco-Ottoman alliance. Therefore immediate were the measures of the new sovereign, strengthened by the previous experience in the government of the Iberian States, who took a series of initiatives intended to complete the defences of the Sardinian Kingdom, but also to implement its administrative structure to make up for the delays respect to the other States of the Monarchy. Defence works and administrative reforms will see the light in the last third of the sixteenth century, after careful preparatory reports, despite the battle of Lepanto (1571) mitigated the pressure on the Mediterranean front.
