This study addresses the critical issue of sustainable management of the world-renowned Apuan marble quarries within the Apuan Alps UNESCO Global Geopark, Italy. Facing a shift towards raw material export and diminishing local processing, the Geopark authority proposes a contingency plan to prioritize high-value applications and preserve the cultural and economic significance of these ornamental stones. Central to this strategy is the development of a comprehensive inventory of 36 historically and culturally valuable marble varieties, identified based on ancient use, distinct recognition, and limited availability. This inventory, constructed through extensive bibliographic research and geological expertise, provides detailed descriptions of each variety, including taxonomy, geological origin, historical quarrying information, and lithological characteristics. By emphasizing the historical and artistic value of Apuan marbles, this inventory aims to support a transition towards a "limited" and "precious" approach, promoting sustainable use and high-quality craftsmanship, thereby ensuring the long-term preservation and economic viability of this unique resource.

Abstract
By emphasizing the historical and artistic value of Apuan marbles, this inventory aims to support a transition towards a "limited" and "precious" approach, promoting sustainable use and high-quality craftsmanship, thereby ensuring the long-term preservation and economic viability of this unique resource.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
