Abstract

The large city walls in the medieval period were built for defensive purposes and major interventions were aimed at strengthening them. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the urban wall circuits began to be affected for completely different reasons, even individual and personal ones. The result of the transformation of settlements, in certain cases, still exist today. This is the case in the Terra d’Otranto region, where three case studies will be analyzed: Ugento, Specchia, and Scorrano.
