The adsorption of C60 onto metal surfaces can lead to the formation of complicated reconstruction. In this contribution we show how the combination of inverse photoemission spectroscopy and surface x-ray diffraction experiments can give the details of the adsorption process providing the information on the bonding geometry and on the electronic states. The combination of these two techniques show that it is not possible to describe the process in terms of electronic exchange but the molecule plus substrate has to be considered as a whole for a full comprehension of these systems. © 2009 World Scientific Publishing Co. Abstract
