Abstract

In order to understand whether Śuri (with variant Śur) is an ethnic deity or not, we should try to find out whether he is in fact a deity at all, since some studies seem to contradict Giovanni Colonna’s theses at various points, who has outlined the characteristics of the god Śuri in the most thorough manner. The analysis conducted from the history of studies, the study of iconographic and epigraphic sources seems to confirm that this is an indigenous male deity, Apollo in the interpretatio Graeca, to be identified with Soranus Pater, who corresponds to Vediovis and thus to Dis Pater, but also to Manth. In the Southern Area of Pyrgi the cult of Śuri certainly took on a specific character, especially as it was associated with Cavatha. If we therefore understand by ethnic deity a deity linked to a certain consciousness of belonging of a people, Śuri in his assimilations was, also because Pyrgi was one of those shrines that can be defined as ethnic, – for which one can postulate a relationship with the traditions concerning the origin of the whole Etruscan nomen
