Rooted cuttings of two poplar clones (I-214 and Eridano) were exposed to two toxic levels of Zn (1mM and 5 mM) in hydroponics to evaluate their capability to tolerate and concentrate the metal in plant parts and the effect of these Zn concentrations on photosynthesis, water relations and photoprotection capacity. Clone Eridano showed higher metal accumulation in roots and tolerance to Zn with respect to I-214. Physiological differences between clones were especially remarkable at 1mM [Zn] with enhanced decline in I-214 in photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, water use efficiency (WUE) and chlorophyll content. Treatment with 5mM [Zn] originated a notable physiological impairment in both clones but the higher antioxidant protection in Eridano maintained the PSII functionality.
