Abstract

In the mid-1990s, awareness of the importance of resto ration quality and safety in the work environment began to assert itself in the conservation and management of cultural heritage. The traditional deterioration agents such as time passing and negligence, air pollution, and climate change were added as catalysers of deterioration processes. Avoiding generating further pollution and op erating in safe working environments should be the main aim of sustainability in restoration, avoiding the paradox that the very act of conservation can cause air pollution, thus creating a cycle of deterioration that perpetuates the problem rather than solving it. The article analyses the evolution of the ‘sustainable restoration’ concept, paying attention to the two-way relationship between research and the restoration field and to the impact of language on the perception and behavior of restorers. The new UNI 11897:2023 standard provides guidelines
