This brief note addresses a passage from Theaetetus (155a2-b4) that introduces three theses about the nature of becoming. These three theses have been interpreted in various ways, especially concerning relational forms of statements and Cambridge change. My objective is to highlight the multilayered reading that can be made of the text. After reviewing the main arguments put forward by the scholarly literature, I offer three readings of the sense of the three theses. These readings complement each other and show how finely the theses are formulated, suggesting different levels of interpretation.

Abstract

This brief note addresses a passage from Theaetetus (155a2-b4) that introduces three theses about the nature of becoming. These three theses have been interpreted in various ways, especially concerning relational forms of statements and Cambridge change. My objective is to highlight the multilayered reading that can be made of the text. After reviewing the main arguments put forward by the scholarly literature, I offer three readings of the sense of the three theses. These readings complement each other and show how finely the theses are formulated, suggesting different levels of interpretation.
