n the Arvid Andrén Collection, donated by his son Per Axel Andrén in 2001 to the Museum of Cultural History at the University of Oslo, is aninteresting votive clay figurine. Technically attributable to Tarentine production, it documents for the first time with an intact specimen a hitherto almost unknown type. The study analyses the various theses concerning the possible transmission of the iconographic model from Athens to Magna Graecia and in particular to Taranto. The pose and some attributes recall the Artemis Bendis type. According to recent studies, statuettes of the so-called Artemis Bendis type have been found in Apulia in sanctuaries with maritime connotations peripheral to the settlements with a singular parallelism with the official acceptance of the cult of Artemis Bendis at Piraeus port of Athens probably in 430/429 BC following the vow made afterthe outbreak of the Peloponnesian War.

Abstract
n the Arvid Andrén Collection, donated by his son Per Axel Andrén in 2001 to the Museum of Cultural History at the University of Oslo, is aninteresting votive clay figurine. According to recent studies, statuettes of the so-called Artemis Bendis type have been found in Apulia in sanctuaries with maritime connotations peripheral to the settlements with a singular parallelism with the official acceptance of the cult of Artemis Bendis at Piraeus port of Athens probably in 430/429 BC following the vow made afterthe outbreak of the Peloponnesian War.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
