Abstract

Entering a cave is an adventure for Homo sapiens, accustomed to light and modern comforts. These caves, considered inhospitable by humans, are ideal environments for the blind and depigmented organisms that inhabit them. Many of these organi- sms, such as the beetle Leptodirus hochenwartii, have evolved specific adaptations to thrive in conditions of darkness and scarcity of re- sources. Underground biodiversity is astonishing, with over 20,000 species described and estimates suggesting that between 50,000 and 100,000 exist. Underground ecosystems are important for biogeo- chemical cycles and provide vital resources, but they are threatened by human activities that alter their conditions. These ecosystems are vulnerable to changes in land use and direct pressures such as mining and tourism. The combination of local impacts and clima- te change could have unpredictable effects. Conservation measures are needed to protect these environments. Two key ingredients have been identified: setting aside areas for conservation and raising public awareness of the importance of nature. Speleologists can con- tribute by collecting data and promoting awareness-raising activi- ties. Protecting caves means protecting biodiversity and reawake- ning respect for the unknown.
