This paper presents a novel statistical approach for the evaluation of relevant features of a liquid jet in crossflow. Image statistical analysis is described and applied to a database of about 300 experimental conditions obtained by injecting jet-A1 and water in a high-density air crossflow at various air pressures and temperatures. The binarization and further overlapping of the collected frames produces average binary images, from which is possible to extract, by means of purposely developed procedures, a curve defined as centerline of the spray. The study of jet trajectory and centerline, along with their functional dependencies on the operating parameters of the process, is exploited to achieve indications on design opportunities to improve the performance of the premixing system.
