This research studies an innovative garbage sorting solution by initiating a grass-root cooperative project in Hongfuyuan, a residential community in Changping district of Beijing. We tracked the waste sorting behavior of participating households by QR codes and provided various incentives according to their sorting performance. With this program, we obtained the information of real household behaviors during the whole experiment process. The result shows that the on-site promotion and face to face interactions are crucial in building the habits of garbage sorting. The behaviors of household can hardly change only by the deployment of facilities. Secondly, collaboration with informal junk-buyers in the community is practicable, however, the economic mechanism should be restructured to correctly represent the value of waste-reduction.
