This contribution discusses how National Socialism influenced the life and career of the Assyriologist Albrecht Götze and the development of Ancient Near Eastern studies. It is based on Götze’s correspondence, mostly unpublished, preserved in the Yale University Archives. Shedding light on lesser-known facts about the scholar’s life, this archival material highlights his moral rigor and uncompromising defense of intellectual and spiritual freedom during the harsh years of Nazi dictatorship.
