The philosophical conception of Ángel Ganivet, an emblematic figure of the generation of ’98, comes essentially from his tragic vision of existence and his fruitful reading, among other authors, of Seneca and Schopenhauer. His writings reveal the drama of modern man torn apart by a disillusioned and empty world. Ganivet then felt the irrepressible need to flee from life and all his work is nothing more than the attempt to find an ideal that frees him from the seduction of suicide and the pain of not finding it. Taking refuge in a self-creative idealism, Ganivet soon discovers nothingness, the impossibility of achieving a permanent ideal life. The antiphony present in his spirit between the will and the intellect ceases to be dialoguing in the end, leading to an existential nihilism that leads him to fulfill his tragic destiny, to decide, like his teacher Seneca, to “tread the needs”, in a last act of rebellion against the absurdity of existence.
