In this paper, I discuss a very specific phenomenon, that of intercalation, and analyse how this was perceived by the peoples of ancient Mesopotamia and how it affected their religious habits. First, I briefly introduce the phenomenon of intercalation and offer a diachronic analysis of instances taken from the third and second millennium BCE Near Eastern cultic calendars. Then, I examine certain interesting sources primarily dating back to the Neo-Assyrian time. Finally, I reflect upon the inherent nature of intercalary months in ancient Mesopotamia.

Abstract
In this paper, I discuss a very specific phenomenon, that of intercalation, and analyse how this was perceived by the peoples of ancient Mesopotamia and how it affected their religious habits. First, I briefly introduce the phenomenon of intercalation and offer a diachronic analysis of instances taken from the third and second millennium BCE Near Eastern cultic calendars. Then, I examine certain interesting sources primarily dating back to the Neo-Assyrian time. Finally, I reflect upon the inherent nature of intercalary months in ancient Mesopotamia.File in questo prodotto:
