In this paper, I analyse some archival documents that witness Austen Henry Layard's relationship with the pioneers of Assyriology. The aim is to infer how he was perceived by the scholars of this time, how he felt about the decipherment of the texts he found and, in more general terms, how he conceived his own excavations in Assyria.
