This study analyzes mortar samples from masonry structures of the Naviglio di San Gerolamo, uncovered during excavations for the M4 De Amicis metro station in Milan (2017–2022). Using optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction, the research identifies mineralogical and textural variability among mortars. The presence of both calcitic and magnesian lime binders indicates different material sources and multiple construction or repair phases. Aggregates derive from fluvial sands of local origin. The results highlight the heterogeneity of historical mortars and the limits of using composition alone for chronological interpretation.

Abstract
This study analyzes mortar samples from masonry structures of the Naviglio di San Gerolamo, uncovered during excavations for the M4 De Amicis metro station in Milan (2017–2022). Using optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction, the research identifies mineralogical and textural variability among mortars. The presence of both calcitic and magnesian lime binders indicates different material sources and multiple construction or repair phases. Aggregates derive from fluvial sands of local origin. The results highlight the heterogeneity of historical mortars and the limits of using composition alone for chronological interpretation.File in questo prodotto:
